Living by Covenant

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to turn the world upside down, the Holy Spirit has repeatedly put on my heart that believers must to learn to live by a covenant relationship with the Lord.

Speaking as a US citizen, the American church has lived by the prosperity of the world’s strongest economy, the excellence of our healthcare system, and the safety of mostly law-abiding citizens.

But here’s the problem. Many Americans who refer to themselves as a Christian—who go to church regularly, tithe, and even read their Bibles—have “made a decision for Christ,” but they haven’t truly entered into a covenant relationship with Him.

As I will explain in this post and the ones to come, there is a big difference between the two.

As external things are increasingly shaken in the years ahead, only what is of Christ will remain. This means many professing Christians who “made a decision for Christ” could easily fall away from the Lord, believing that “this Jesus thing” doesn’t really work.

Now Is the Time to Learn How to Live by Covenant

The antichrist agenda that is presently spreading throughout the earth—and will increase in the days ahead—is often easier to accept than the hardships, pressures, and persecution involved in following Christ.

This is why it’s imperative for believers to learn—starting right now—how to live in a covenant relationship with God. It will never be easier to learn how to live in the fullness of the New Covenant than it is now.

For this reason, I will be writing about how to live in a covenant relationship with the Lord over the next several weeks.

As a side note, I wrote Understanding Your Inheritance in Christ in 2004 to teach believers how to live in a covenant relationship with God. If you subscribe to our email list, we will give you this eBook for free. You can join here:

The truths in this book are important and timely. But if I were to rewrite the book now, I would also include what I am sharing in this blog. So, these articles contain lessons from my book and new lessons I’ve learned over the 16 years since.

Hold Fast to the Covenant

With that said, notice what Isaiah stated: “The foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, to minister to Him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be His servants, everyone who keeps from profaning the sabbath and holds fast My covenant; even those I will bring to My holy mountain and make them joyful in My house of prayer” (Isa. 56:6-7, emphasis mine).

Holding fast to the covenant is how we are to live. That is, we are to develop a lifestyle that flows out of the New Covenant that was cut between our heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Then, no matter what pressures come our way, holding fast to our covenant relationship with Christ will enable us to be steady as the winds of culture shift and change.

Defining Covenant

The word covenant is used approximately three hundred times in the Bible. Permeating both the Old and New Testament, covenant is a central theme throughout Scripture. In fact, what we normally call the Old Testament and New Testament are really the Old Covenant and New Covenant.

The definition of the English, Hebrew, and Greek words for covenant give insight into the concept of a covenant. I go into much greater detail in my book, but I will summarize here:

A covenant is a formal, extremely solemn and binding agreement based upon a common purpose, often secured by a blood sacrifice, which binds two parties together as one for life.

I’ve got much more to share in upcoming articles, but I’ll end with this. Take this opportunity, before the end-time pressures increase, to learn how to live in a covenant relationship with Christ. Speaking from experience, this will change your life and revolutionize your relationship with Him.
